Asti is a city with a history dating back thousands of years, rooted in the ancient Roman colony of Hasta. One of the most powerful cities in Piedmont during the Middle Ages, today it still retains a surprisingly intact historic center of fine medieval architecture with 18th- and 19th-century elements, punctuated by medieval towers, elegant Baroque palaces, Romanesque churches, and atmospheres of yesteryear.
The city of Asti, the capital of Monferrato, is intimately linked to the homogeneous provincial territory: a harmonious succession of rolling hills rippling into the Val Bormida and Langa Astigiana.
